Behavioral Consultations

Compassionate, Practical Behavior Support for Pets and Families

Behavior challenges can affect every part of life at home, from daily routines to safety, stress levels, and the bond you share with your pet. At our hospital, we offer comprehensive and compassionate behavioral consultations for pets and families facing anxiety, aggression, house-soiling, veterinary visit stress, and other behavior-related concerns.

Dr. Rachel Cachero has a special interest in behavior management and works with families to create practical, individualized plans that support both the pet and the people who care for them.

Behavior Concerns We Can Help With

Behavior consultations may be recommended for pets experiencing:

  • Separation anxiety or situational anxiety at home
  • Storm, fireworks, or noise sensitivity
  • Aggression toward people or other animals
  • Behavioral house-soiling after medical causes have been ruled out
  • Fear-based reactivity at home or in the veterinary setting
  • Ongoing stress or behavior changes that create caregiver burden or significantly affect daily life

What to Expect During a Behavior Consultation

Initial behavior consultations are scheduled as dedicated 60-minute appointments. This allows time for a detailed history, observation, discussion of your pet’s environment and routine, and development of a tailored behavior plan.

In some cases, shorter or more straightforward behavior concerns may be addressed during a routine wellness or medical visit. More complex concerns will be scheduled as a full behavior consultation. Follow-up visits are typically 30 minutes.

When appropriate, we will first perform or confirm a medical diagnostic workup, such as bloodwork, chemistry testing, urinalysis, or other recommended diagnostics. This helps rule out medical conditions that may be contributing to behavior changes.

Treatment Options

Every behavior plan is customized to the pet, family, and situation. Treatment may include:

  • Behavior modification and training recommendations
  • Environmental and management strategies
  • Cooperative care support
  • Targeted supplements
  • Prescription medications when appropriate
  • Medical monitoring for pets taking behavior medications
  • Ongoing plan adjustments based on progress

Our goal is to create a realistic, supportive plan that improves your pet’s quality of life while helping your family feel more confident and less overwhelmed.

Telemedicine and Follow-Up Support

Telemedicine may be available for certain behavior follow-ups or initial visual assessments. This can be especially helpful when reviewing home behaviors, discussing progress, or planning medication strategies before an in-clinic visit.

We also offer low-stress handling practices throughout the clinic and technician-led cooperative care support to help pets feel more comfortable during veterinary visits.

Referrals and Continued Care

When needed or requested, we can refer pets to a board-certified veterinary behaviorist. We are happy to coordinate care with specialists when advanced behavior support is the best next step.
