Urgent Care vs. Emergency Care: What’s the Difference?

Pet urgent care is for situations that need prompt attention but may not be immediately life-threatening. These are concerns that should not wait several days, but may not require full emergency hospitalization.

Emergency care is different. Emergencies may involve serious trauma, rapid decline, trouble breathing, collapse, severe pain, toxin exposure, or symptoms that require immediate intervention, advanced diagnostics, surgery, or ongoing monitoring.

Conditions We May Be Able to See for Same-Day or Urgent Care

If availability allows, our team may be able to see your pet the same day or during Sunday urgent care hours by appointment.

  • Limping or minor injuries
  • Ear infections or head shaking
  • Eye redness, squinting, or discharge
  • Coughing or sneezing without breathing distress

  • Scooting or anal gland discomfort
  • Urinary changes, accidents, or straining
  • Mild allergic reactions, facial swelling, or hives
  • General behavior changes or “not acting like themselves”

When to Seek Emergency Care Right Away

Some situations are too serious to wait for a routine or urgent care appointment. Please seek emergency veterinary care right away if your pet is experiencing:

  • Vomiting blood
  • Severe bleeding or deep wounds
  • Major trauma, such as being hit by a car
